About Beaujolais Villages
Beaujolais Villages is exceptional wine produced from grapes grown in 38 designated villages within the Haut Beaujolais, the northern part of the Beaujolais region. These villages produce higher quality grapes than the rest of Beaujolais. Ten of these produce the best of the Villages wine and is called Cru Beaujolais.
Beaujolais Village is a unmistakable step up from basic Beaujolais, Villages wines are light, with a hint of pear-drop identifiable within the red fruits. The Villages tend to richer with more personality than the Beaujolais. These wines tend to be released in the March following the harvest and are meant to be consumed within two years of their harvest.
Beaujolais Villages are so good due to the area of the 38 villages being hillier with more granite soil than what is found in the regions of the Beaujolais area and thus the wine tends to be of a much higher quality. Wine produced using grapes from a single vinyard within the 38 Villages are allowed to affix the name of the village to the bottle, but since most of the villages of Beaujolais, have little international recognition most choose to label there wines as Beaujolais-Villages. Some of this Villages wine is sold at Beaujolais Nouveau time as Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau, however this is a rare occurance.
The Beaujolais producers that produce a red wine under the Beaujolais-Villages appellation often produce any white wine under the internationally recognized names of Saint-Véran or Mâcon-Villages.
